Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - FINALLY, we're traveling again, now that we're fully vaccinated! So, with only four states in the US left to visit, we decided to take a road trip to Biloxi, Mississippi. The ride down was quite uneventful. After a relaxing afternoon, we drove over to Half Shell Oyster Restaurant for an amazing dinner! Rob had the fried shrimp, with gumbo and fries. I enjoyed a grilled red fish with a caesar salad and sweet potato "creme brulee" - which was amazing. Our plan is to eat seafood for the next few days, and tonight's dinner was a fabulous start!
Thursday, May 20, 2021 - Today was a blustery, but pleasant day in Biloxi as we headed over to Keesler AFB for our 10:00 tee time at Bay Breeze Golf Course. At times, we felt like we were hitting the ball into hurricane-force winds, but we enjoyed our round.
From there, we traveled to the BX where we saw covered parking that was actually small, solar panels. After shopping, we had a light lunch at the Starbucks next to the Base Exchange. Back at the hotel, we took a nap, read for a while, and then got ready for dinner. Tonight, we went to Shaggy's, also on the beach. We enjoyed a fabulous she-crab soup and dinner. We're loving the delicious seafood here in Biloxi.
Friday, May 21, 2021 - We slept in because our tee time was 1:40. So, after a leisurely morning, we drove over to Keesler AFB to have lunch at their Back Bay Cafe. This lovely dining place has an amazing view of the gulf and golf course. After a delicious lunch, we checked in with the pro shop and then headed over to golf the back nine.
The winds are still a bit gusty, but not miserable. After our round, Rob decided to take a nap while I walked around a bit taking pictures, then walked the beach, and finally read by the pool. Tonight for dinner, we decided to venture out to a local place, "Taranto's and Son" about 15 minutes away from the beach. What a treasure. Truly, it was out in the boondocks. However, the food was so authentic, with the po boy bread actually coming from NOLA! We kept saying that we were "soaking in the local color"! The servers were all happy, and sweet, and genuinely helping each other. The clientele was definitely from around the area. Definitely worth the 15 minute drive from the beach!
Saturday, May 22, 2021 - Another morning without an alarm clock - such a luxury! After coffee, we drove over to the Naval Air Station at Gulfport. We shopped in the NEX for a while, filled up the car with gas, and drove over to Ocean Springs. We had planned to stroll around the very cute little town, but it was SOOOOO crowded, with no place to park, so we ventured back to the hotel. Rob took a nap, and I read by the pool until it was time to clean up for dinner.
We drove back over to Half Shell Oyster House and waited an hour plus 5 minutes. It was so worth the wait. We both enjoyed fabulous meals - Rob the shrimp and grit cakes, and I had grilled snapper with asparagus covered in gorgonzola cheese. We shared a cinnamon roll bread pudding dessert. We've enjoyed so much seafood, that I'm convinced we'll return to ATL with gills and fins!
