North to Alaska - July 31 - August 14, 2017

July 30, 2017

Thank you, Robert and Ari, for the ride to the airport.  New thing we learned today - domestic first class ticket holders, MAY NOT use the Delta Sky Club!  Bummer!  No problem though, we read (actually Rob napped) until our flight departed at 01:52 AM for Seattle.  Nestled comfortably in seas 9 B & C, we settled in for our 5 hour 22 minutes flight.  Best part of the flight - soaring past Mt. Rainer, which truly looked like you could reach out and touch it!

After our arrival, we tried our new Lyft app - score - great ride to the Paramount Hotel for a mere $16.00, versus the $50.00 rate quoted to us at the airport.  We quickly dropped off our luggage in our room and met the Stewarts.  After a short visit, we headed off to the Space Needle and Chihuly exhibit, only to discover a two hour wait.  Forget that!  So, we took an Uber ride back over to the waterfront to enjoy drinks at the harbor, as well as a delicious dinner at Elliott's Oyster House.

Our waitress, Natalie, was absolutely adorable and made our outdoor dining a special treat!  We walked (Rob insisted that it was a marathon) back to the hotel for an early turn-in prepping in anticipation for tomorrow.

July 31, 2017

Good morning, Seattle!  And, what a glorious, gorgeous day it is, so we strolled to our nearest Starbucks for a delicious breakfast.  Afterwards, we took The Toddler back to our lovely Paramount Hotel for his rest time while Teri, Alan, and I walked down to the Public Market.

Naturally, we had to watch the “flying fish” at Pike’s, as well as stroll through the awesome market.  The flowers, fresh produce, and local sights were quite captivating.  On our walk back to the hotel, we made a detour into the Macy’s. We took an Uber ride to the port, where we quickly processed through the Holland America terminal.  Once on board, we settled into Cabin 3404, our home away from home for the next couple of weeks.

We discovered The Crow’s Nest for our Happy Hour which has the most incredible view, especially around 7:00 PM! Our dining room servers, Andri and Anggia, are a fabulous team, and we look forward to many happy meals at Table 80.

August 1, 2017

Ah, love those days at sea.  We slept in, and then enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the dining room.  As always, we found our favorite “spot” next to the coffee in the Explorers’ Lounge.  The guys read while Teri and I worked on needlework.  For this cruise, I’m completing the upcoming Retreat Challenge Blocks for Joan’s quilt.  Once the embroidery and applique are finished for those blocks, I’ll continue my embroidery for a Thanksgiving quilt.

After lunch, Rob look his obligatory nap while Teri, Alan, and I worked out.  Next, Alan went upstairs for his nap, Teri and I explored the ship’s shops.

We’re VERY happy with The Crow’s Nest, followed by tonight’s amazing Gala dinner.  Alan treated us to a luxurious bottle of Caymus for dinner!  YUM!  Tonight’s show, featuring the ship’s singers and dancers, was the perfect way to end this relaxing day.

Our very talented and sweet cabin gal, Christina, created adorable creatures to greet us every evening when we returned to our cabin.

August 2, 2017

Hello, Ketchikan!  We met on the pier for our Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer, and sailed off for this lovely four hour tour. In 1978,over 2 million acres within the Tongass National Forest was designated as the Misty Fjords National Monument. The Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Alaska Native societies live here. We saw a black-tailed deer, harbor seals, eagle, and a variety of birds as we traveled within the Revillagigedo Channel, Behm Canal, and various bays.  Our naturalist gave us an abundance of fascinating facts including the tidal variances of up to 26 feet!  Located near the entrance of Rudyerd Bay, we saw the distinctive shape of New Eddystone Rock, a volcano plug. Another intriguing feature was the tiny white gull birds living on the steep fjords.  Their nests hang precariously on the edge containing elliptical shaped eggs that are flat on the bottom to ensure that they stay put.  Talk about adaptation!

After our excursion, we returned to the ship for lunch, drop off Rob for his nap, and then headed into town to explore.  We saw a majestic bald eagle along creek street.  Unfortunately, the salmon are still buried deep in the streams because the weather has been too warm.  Bummer!  Alan stopped for a local beer while Teri and I explored the quilt shop. Back on board, I enjoyed doing my needlework on the open deck as we sailed away.  We enjoyed a relaxing happy hour in The Crow’s Nest, followed by a delicious dinner.  Tonight’s entertainment was a very talented pianist, Paul Pappas.

August 3, 2017

Well, the time change must have finally caught up with us, as we both were wide awake at 0645 hours!  So, we decided to enjoy another relaxing breakfast for two in the dining room. Today is a “scenic cruise” day which was supposed to feature Tracy Arm; however, the captain opted to divert us to Endicott Arm because Tracy Arm has receded a bit, putting too much ice in our path.  He felt that the Endicott Arm glacier would be better, and we certainly didn’t mind since we had already seen Tracy Arm.  The bow of the ship was opened for passengers, and the scenery was positively breathtaking.  We did see a humpback whale, but Rob insisted that it “didn’t count” because the whale didn’t breach the water!  Oh well, perhaps tomorrow.  We did see harbor seals and an eagle on the little icebergs.  The beautiful blue glacier was so majestic.  Even as we enjoyed lunch, we could view the glacier as the captain turned the ship 360 degrees around for everyone’s viewing pleasure!

Later, Rob took his nap, while I did needlework with Teri (Alan read) in the Explorers’ Lounge.  I worked out in the gym, and then took a 25 minute “Fab Abs” class which I could certainly use!

August 4, 2017
Good morning, Juneau, as we welcome another beautiful, sunny day. This area was surveyed by Captain George Vancouver, a protégé of Captain James Cook, in 1791.  Our modern day leader, a hysterical bus driver, Don Jon, drives us to the port, as we board the St. Gregory for our whale quest.  Our naturalist, Keegan, is a marine biology major, specializing in whales, so we are treated to endless facts about whales, such as the baby whale gains seven pounds per hour in his/her first few days of life.  The humpback whales feed in Alaska, then migrate to Hawaii for mating.  Quite the life they enjoy.  The first half of our three hour trip along the Saginaw Channel in Auke Bay is filled with gorgeous scenery as we pass Admiralty Island where over 1500 bears reside.  Unfortunately, Rob did not get to see even ONE of these bears. We did spend some time enjoying the relaxing Harbor Seals and frolicking Sea Lions.

Right when we thought we would not see any whales, we sailed into an area with FOUR humpbacks feeding.  Humpback whales eat approximately one ton of krill and small fish per day! The captain turned off the motor so we could just enjoy our time with the amazing creatures.  As the sun glistened on the calm water, these large mammals alternated between blowing and showing (their tails) while the passengers snapped picture after picture.  Nature’s choreography was spectacular!
Don Jon, a University of Utah Valley student, entertained us with corny jokes and cute stories as we drove over to Mendenhall Glacier.  As we hiked to the photo area, it was obvious that the glacier had receded since our last visit in 2010.  Nevertheless, it was still gorgeous!  We stopped by the Visitor’s Center and enjoyed an informative video before boarding the bus to return to the Amsterdam.

Rob was starting to develop a cold or some sort of breathing difficulty due to the paint fumes in our cabin, so I took a short walk back into town to pick up a few cold supplies.  The sunshine was so warm that I did not need my light jacket! After a quick clean up, I attended Shabbat Services.  Holland America does a lovely job of providing a very comfortable room, wine, candles, prayer books, challah, and an oneg cake.  Our service was brief, mainly because it was conducted by fellow passengers, but quite meaningful.  After another delicious dinner, we returned to our room.

August 5, 2017

Wow!  Sunshine and warm weather, again!  One of the locals commented that today was only Icy Strait Point’s 15th day of sunshine thus far during 2017. We walked the 1.5 miles into town along a very scenic coastal path.  Once in town, I zipped off the lower part of my hiking pants because it was extremely warm!  We walked over to the “eagle’s nest tree” to see if there was any activity.  We could tell that something was in the nest, but no real details.  Just as we were about to leave, Alan turned back to observe that the majestic bald eagle was returning.  Wow!  Eventually, the mate also emerged from the nest, and we could see another young eagle.  About that time, the lady who lives next to the tree came over with her binoculars and some details.  She said that there were two babies in the nest who would probably fly away in September.  Eagles mate for life, and the female typically gathers the food for the young while the male remains on the nest.  Their “clutch” usually varies from 1 – 3.  I could have stayed there all day watching these amazing creatures, but our ship was sailing at 1300 hours, so we had to move on.

Next, we visited the Huna Tribal House Project where we watched the artist work on a totem poll.  This very talented artist carved the backs on the majority of the benches in this town.  He was a very proud native of this tiny town of about 800 residents, only of which 500 were year round residents.  He was captivating, and again, I could have stayed entertained by him for hours, but we needed to return to the ship.  We were supposed to sail at 1400 hours but we were delayed due to a passenger being medically disembarked.  Whew, that brought back horrible memories of dad’s episode on our 2010 Alaskan cruise. My heart hurt for the passenger, as well as his/her family. We left about 30 minutes late, headed for our next day at sea.
August 6, 2017
Days at sea are so rejuvenating!  After our wonderful breakfast in the dining room, we retreated to the Explorers’ Lounge to read (Rob) and do some needlework (me) while sipping coffee.  I attended a Wellness Class which was informative, almost a one-on-one class, as only three other folks attended! We lunched, relaxed, and then I even tried to nap, but no luck.  So, I put on my gym clothes to workout, as well as attend another killer “fab abs” class.  It was our second gala night, and everyone looked quite lovely.  The “Roadhouse” entertainment was a wonderful combination of country tunes. Sunset tonight was 10:10 PM!  Sunrise tomorrow – 6:10 AM!

August 7, 2017

Hello, Anchorage, along with another day of sunshine. The tides fluctuate up to 30 feet here, so the gangway will adjust three times during our 12 hour stay.  We were shuttled into town by a comfortable couch bus.  Teri and I immediately headed off to the quilt store while the fellows enjoyed coffee.  I found the perfect panel for a baby gift!  We then headed over to Humpy’s for a truly awesome lunch.  I enjoyed the Halibut fish and chips (my only cheat meal on this trip) and Rob had a crab sandwich that looked like it could feed four!
Upon returning to the ship, the gangplank had indeed moved from deck one to deck three!  Rob napped, I walked the promenade, and then eventually went to the Explorer’s Lounge to relax.  In the background, I could hear a violinist playing beautiful classical music, as well as Hallelujah, one of my favorites.  Tonight’s entertainment was the Indonesian Production put on by the crew.  We were SO proud of Andri, how happened to be the conductor!

August 8, 2017

Along with our sunshine, we had hundreds of sea birds squawking a greeting as we arrived in Homer this morning.  Our “hop-on-hop-off” school bus shuttle took us six miles into town.  Our first stop was the True Value Hardware store that actually was a down-sized Walmart type store.  I purchased more Delsym Cough Syrup for Rob, then checked out the fabric selection, still on my quest to find applique thread, but alas, no luck.  Guess folks don’t applique here in Alaska.  Oh well, we strolled the streets looking in several local shops.

I found four incredible pictures taken/signed by a local photographer which will make a great collage!  We took our shuttle back to the Homer Spit to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, Captain Paddies’, recommended by our bus driver. My halibut tacos were divine! Back on board, we enjoyed coffee with the Stewarts in the Explorers Lounge before returning to our cabin for a little nap.

August 9, 2017
Well, today, we finally had the “typical” Alaskan weather, a slight drizzle.  But, that didn’t stop Teri, Alan, and I from venturing into Kodiak to explore!  First stop, Flying Geese Quilt store, and unfortunately, no applique thread.  Really?????  On to another store, where I happened to find a couple of t-shirts.  In the community building, local folks were selling crafts, and I managed to find a few more treasures.  Hey, I always have to support the local economy!  While walking back to the ship, Alan noticed a local cannery on “Cannery Row” so we stopped to take a peak.  The workers were very sweet, and gave us lots of information about their company, Pacific Seafood.  One employee kept fussing at us for taking pictures, but the main guy said to ignore her!  So, we enjoyed our own little excursion!

Rob finally gave in and agreed that he was sick enough to see the ship’s doctor, so when the medical facility opened at 1630 hours, we were first in line.  The adorable doctor from South Africa immediately gave Rob a breathing treatment, prednisone, and an antibiotic.  He opted to stay in our cabin for the evening, and room service was ordered.  After dinner, Teri, Alan, and I attended the John Denver/Jim Curry show, which was fantastic.

August 10, 2017
Today, Rob began to feel better again.  We all enjoyed a quiet morning in the Explorers’ Lounge, and then off to the gym before lunch.  Around 1400 hours, Rob and I settled in the Crow’s Nest for the beginning of our journey to Hubbard Glacier. By around 1530, everyone was out on dock as we approached this seven mile long, four mile wide glacier.  It is North America’s largest tidal glacier! We stood in awe as the glacier calved over and over again.  The best description is that it sounded as if the glacier was thundering inside, then a huge avalanche of ice would cascade into the bay.  We were totally mesmerized!  The grand finale was a beautiful rainbow as we departed the area!

August 11, 2017

Good morning, Sitka!  This morning’s excursion took us to the Sitka Sound aboard another Allen Marine vessel for our Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest.  Immediately we spotted some Steller Sea Lions.  The difference between sea lions and seals are their larger size, ear flaps, and rotating rear flippers.  These cute critters were enjoying salmon as we sailed by.  We continued into a cove where we saw red and purple star fish and sea urchins through the crystal-clear water, as well as a majestic bald eagle perched high in a Sitka cider. Then, as we rounded a corner, we came upon a rather large raft of sea otters.  These cute, cute marine mammals have no extra fat layers for warmth, but rely only upon their rich fur for protection against the cold water.  This fur is the densest fur in the world with over 300,00 hairs per square inch. We truly enjoyed watching them frolic until another on-coming vessel had to blow its horn, frightening them away!

Jokingly, Rob said that there were two bears on the shoreline, and within a few minutes, a passenger did spot a bear!  The captain navigated the boat as close as possible, and actually, there were TWO young bears playing. Finally, Rob got to see his bears.  The two bears walked, and ran along the shore while we happily watched.  Sadly, we had to return to the pier, but along the way we spotted two humpback whales!  We learned that it takes 30 days for these whales to travel from Alaska to Maui. We also came upon these adorable sea lions!  What an amazing excursion.

Once back on land, Rob headed to the ship, while Alan, Teri, and I ventured into town.  Sitka is a charming little city built around a Russian Orthodox church. We spotted Re-fresh Restaurant where we enjoyed fabulous seafood for lunch.  Now, we were ready to shop! But first, a quick stop at the ATM.  We then found the quilt shop where I purchased a cute t-shirt and applique thread.  We browsed around a few other shops, then started back to the ship, when we spotted a section that we had not explored.  Luckily, we found a great art shop featuring a local artist and purchased a couple of his prints.  Next store, we made a couple of purchases at the Alaskan Salt Shop, then strolled back to the ship.

Tonight’s entertainer, Amy Lee, was a very talented violinist who provided a fabulous show.

August 12, 2017

Another relaxing day at sea, but, unfortunately, we woke to the horrible smell of paint AGAIN!  After breakfast, I met with the Hotel Manager to discuss this only “bad” feature of our cruise.  While she was a very lovely lady, she could only provide me with a Holland America Customer Service contact number once we return home. I will definitely contact them! Today, we spent time relaxing in the Explorers’ Lounge, and now, updating our blog, as well as downloading yesterday’s pictures!

August 13, 2017
Victoria, British Columbia and a gorgeous, sunny day = perfection combination for our last day on the cruise. The winds were quite gusty, but the warmth of the sunshine was really the only thing to notice, so Alan, Teri, and I hopped a bus to downtown.  Lovely downtown Victoria, it was just as charming as I remembered.  We were even lucky enough to have the same art/crafts show!  Teri and I found some treasures to purchase, and then we all went to Starbucks to download our email.
Rob had remained on board, as he still feels lousy, and his coughing is dreadful. Luckily, he felt good enough to attend dinner and the final show.

August 14, 2017
All the crew waved farewell as we left the Amsterdam.  We took Uber to the airport where we said farewell to the Stewarts as we went to the Delta Sky Club to spend the next few hours before our flight home. I made several phone calls, the most important one to Rob's pulmonary doctor, Dr. Lock.  He'll see him first thing tomorrow morning!  The flight home was uneventful and Robert and Ari picked us up.  Home sweet home!

Destination Disney - 2017

Sunday, June 4, 2017

Left Marietta at 0830 hours - destination Disney!  As always, David and Lily were fabulous travelers!
We stopped for a quick lunch, then drove on to Shades of Green Resort where we met Uncle Ari and Robert.  After getting settled into our room (202) we headed down to Maggiano's for a delicious dinner. We all went to bed fairly early because we wanted a good night's rest for tomorrow's big day!

Monday, June 5, 2017

After a fabulous buffet breakfast, we left on the 0900 hours bus to the ticket booth to get our vouchers loaded onto our Magic Bands.  Not only did we luck into the nicest Disney employee, but also managed to have a gal from Barcelona who gave us a great recommendation for lunch when we cruise in October.

Within minutes, we were inside the Magic Kingdom!
Our first Fast Pass was for the Haunted Mansion, and then we headed over to Splash Mountain.  Poor Bubbie was really worried, and even Lily had second thoughts, BUT we LOVED it!
Next, we went to Pirates of the Caribbean for another great ride.  By this time, we were all getting a little hot, so we returned to Shades of Green to have lunch at Evergreens.  We decided to cool off some more at the waterpark, Typhoon Lagoon, where Robert H. took Lily and David into the HUGE wave pool.  To Bubbie, it looked like a tsunami!
We returned back to the resort, and Bubbie, Robert H., David and Lily went back to the Magic Kingdom.  The Jungle Cruise was fun, the fireworks were amazing, but the Seven Dwarves Mine Train was the bomb!  Wow, did we have fun!
The ferry wait was REALLY long, but we finally made it back to the resort around 2300 hours.  Bubbie had a record "steps" day with 22,138!

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Today's destination - Animal Kingdom!  After another terrific breakfast, we boarded the 0930 hours bus for our next adventure.  Our first Fast Pass was for the Festival of the Lion King, which is truly an incredible show!  Afterwards, we roamed over to Pandora, Disney's newest attraction that opened on May 27th.  It looks fabulous, and we plan to go back to see it one evening.
Our Kilimanjaro Safari was absolutely captivating!  We saw SO MANY animals!  Next, we had to let Zaydie stop at Starbucks, so we all enjoyed a little break.  The sky started to look really threatening, so we decided to take the next bus back to the resort.  Luckily, we made it to the covered bus stop before the thunderstorm begin.  Perfect timing, since we all decided that we needed a restful afternoon.  Bubbie did a bit of laundry, while updating this blog, while the rest of the gang napped, played games, read, etc.

After another delish dinner at Maggiano's, the evening event was fun at the arcade, then early to bed in preparation for tomorrow's adventure!

Wednesday, June 7, 2017

Today's new adventure - Sea World!  We arrived in less than 20 minutes and easily sailed into the park.
Our first stop was Stingray City.  David and Lily fed the stingrays, then we moved on to the seal, otter, sea lion and walrus show, which was fabulous.

Once out of the show, the showers started, so we ducked inside the Sharks Grill for lunch.  This is an absolutely awesome restaurant connected to the Shark Encounter, so David and Lily were mesmerized by the sea life during our delicious lunch!
By now, the rain was pretty steady, so we put on our ponchos, and visited the awesome Shark Encounter.  From there, we walked to the Dolphin show, which was fantastic.  Unfortunately, the rain was really coming down, so we made a quick stop in a toy store for David and Lily to purchase some treasures, and headed back to the resort.
While in the gym, Bubbie noticed that the rain had stopped, so she checked with the golf pros who said that the course was going to be dry for a couple of hours.  Naturally, she dashed out to play.  The course was quiet, with only six deer and two turkeys, so she finished her round in 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Once back at the resort, she took David and Lily out for a while to the two resort pools.  Ahhhhh, truly relaxing.
We all enjoyed the Asian buffet, and now everyone is quietly relaxing before bed.

Thursday, June 8, 2017

Hollywood Studio, here we come!

Our first Fast Pass was Indiana Jones, and immediately after the show, Lily and David were lucky enough to meet the stars!
After lunch, we scurried over to Toy Story to use our second Fast Pass. Robert H. was the high point scorer!  Then, Lily and David had fun getting their faces painted.

Then, as luck would have it, we happened to walk by a photo opportunity with "the Ducks"!
We headed back to our resort for some quiet time, then Lily, Robert H. and Bubbie took the bus back to Animal Kingdom to check out the new park, Pandora, at night.  But, before the darkness, we decided to ride a few rides:
Finally, we ventured over to Pandora, and WOW, is it beautiful!
The black lights made everything glow in the dark.  Awesome!!!!!

Friday, June, 9, 2017

How can this be?   Our last full day at Disney.  After a fabulous buffet breakfast, Ari, Robert H., David, Lily, and Bubbie took the monorail to Epcot.  We first did a bit of shopping, and then rode the clams through Nemo and Friends and Soarin.  Then we enjoyed the show, Turtle Talk with Crush.  Robert H. and Ari decided to head back to the resort, but the rest of us had a little snack, and the rode Planet Ship Earth.  From there we traveled back to the Magic Kingdom to pick up a few treasures.
Back at the resort, we rested for a while, and then spent a couple of hours at the pool.  We all enjoyed our last dinner with our favorite server, Janisa.  Uncle Ari took David and Lily to the arcade while Bubbie and Zaydie packed for our trip home tomorrow.

Equinox Cruise - 2017

February 9, 2017
Dan drove us to the airport for our noon departure to Fort Lauderdale.  Smooth, easy flight!  We should have taken Uber from the airport to our hotel, but instead got royally ripped off by Yellow Taxi, who charged $41.00 for a ride that Uber only charged $10.38!  Live and learn.
We arrived at The Mint in Hollywood Beach around 1400 hours.  Rob took a nap while I strolled the beach. Awwwwww - Bliss!
Jim Anderson and Cathy picked us up at 1800 hours for our dinner reservations at a cute, local place, "Jimbo's Sandbar Grill" on the Intra-Coastal.  We ate outdoors, catching up on ten years worth of events.  Lovely!

February 10, 2017
The sweet young manager, Joi, at The Mint helped me with our first Uber ride!  What a delightful switch from Yellowcab.
We easily checked in at our Celebrity "Elite" counter.  Note - the agent looked at my passport picture and commented how much my haircut had improved!
Once on board, we had lunch on Deck 14, and then enjoyed a cappuccino while waiting for our room to be ready around 1315 hours.  Love, love, love Cabin 8232.  Rob then took a nap while I checked out the pool area!  I read, made a few calls, and then returned to our room for the Life Boat Drill.
Afterwards, we unpacked and prepared for our first delish dinner at Table 115!

February 11, 2017
First day at sea!  It was a bit chilly so we opted to sip coffee and read/do needle work at the Café al Bacio Bar.  After lunch, I worked out and Rob napped.  We attended the show "Life" which included very talented performers.  This was our first formal night!  Later, Rob had his coffee while enjoyed a chocolate martini.

February 12, 2017
Second day at sea.  We've been setting our alarm for 0900 and enjoying a buffet breakfast.  Our new routine is to head back to the Café Al Bacio Bar for delicious coffee and relaxation.  Today, I got in my cardio by walking on the track.  I did pause to enjoy the poolside line dancing class, then walked to the gym to complete my workout.  The gym is absolutely gorgeous with plenty of equipment.
We enjoyed lunch by the window and then retreated to our balcony for some sun time.  I learned NOT to put my key next to my Kindle as it de-magnetizes the key.  Slow learner, as I'm on my third key!
The "Beatles" impersonation show was excellent.  As always, our dinner was superb!

February 13, 2017

St. Thomas - :) Rained a bit, but then the sun came out, so we shopped!  Rob purchased a gorgeous bracelet for me at our favorite jewelers, Alpha.  While the bracelet was being sized and my ring re-rhrodiumed, we strolled over to the Harley Davidson Store to buy t-shirts for our Arizona family. Then we enjoyed ice coffees and took advantage of the wifi to check our emails.  Back on the ship, we enjoyed lunch by the pool.  After coffee in Rob's favorite bar, we sat on the balcony for the sail off.  After dinner, we enjoyed drinks in the Ensemble Bar.

February 14, 2017

St Kitts - We did a little shopping for t-shirts and magnets.  We returned to the ship and spent some pool time reading.  After an awesome show, we enjoyed chatting with the sweet couple sitting next to us in the dining room, that we thought were Italian.  Actually, they're Canadian.  We had a good laugh!  Since it was Valentine's Day, all the ladies received a beautiful red rose. To top off a perfect evening, we enjoyed gelato for dessert.

February 15, 2017

Barbados - Around 11:00 AM we left the ship and strolled around the very sad downtown.  Interesting trivia, Barbados bans/fines outdoor smoking and camouflaged clothing. After a short while, we returned to the ship.  Rob went back for coffee, and I went to the terminal for the free wifi.  I helped two sweet "older" buys get on the Internet.  After lunch, we went to the I-Lounge to complete the paperwork for luggage valet service.

February 16, 2017

St. Maarten - We enjoyed a quiet morning in the dining room enjoying a leisurely breakfast, then sipped coffee in the Café Al Baclio Bar.  I attended the Port Shopping talk while Rob continued to read.   We arrived into this lovely port around 2:00 PM as we enjoyed lunch on Deck 14. After lunch, I went out to town via the water taxi. I bought a few gifts, saw a HUGE Harley Davidson rally next to our ship.  I found the perfect Philip Stein watch, returned to the ship, and headed to Deck 15 to watch the sun set.  And, another glorious day ends.

February 17, 2017

We enjoyed breakfast in the dining room with a charming couple from Boston.  Since we spent the night docked in St. Maarten, Rob and I went back out together.  We stopped at Diamonds International where Rob bought me the watch I had admired.  While I was completing the watch transaction, Rob strolled around the store looking at all of the gorgeous jewelry.  He pulled me over to look at the most beautiful Ammonite pendant which is mined in Alberta, Canada. After some haggling, Rob made the purchase.  While I was downloading my email on the free wifi, Rob started negotiating on a pair of matching earrings.  YIKES!!!! When we finally left, he had also purchased a pendant, two pair of earrings as gifts, as well as an assortment of charms and two charm bracelets.  Get this man out of this store!  We returned to the coffee bar for iced coffees, then back to the room for Rob's nap and my needlework on the balcony.  We enjoyed a late lunch while watching a sea turtle emerge over and over again from the beautiful Caribbean Sea!  Back we went to the coffee bar for some quiet instrumental music while sipping cappuccino.  Later, I watched us sail away and then headed off to Shabbat services.  I was truly impressed with the lovely services performed from fellow passengers.  Shabbat Shalom.

February 18, 2017

Relaxing day at sea!  After breakfast, I went to the gym while Rob sipped coffee and read.  I then spent a few hours working on needlework while watching the world go by our balcony.  We enjoyed a delicious lunch in the main dining room with "Ricky Martin", Lisa and Jasmine.  I attended the High Tea at 1500 hours in the Blu.  I finished reading Boys in the Boat - how very fitting - as the sun set.  Life is good!

February 19, 2017

Breakfast in the dining room with a charming couple, Bob and Julie, from Baltimore.  Rob enjoyed coffee while I rode the recumbent bike in the gym next to Lee Hilton, a very fascinating man who told great WWII stories.  After lunch, we packed, and then watched the last "sea" sunset for this cruise.  We enjoyed another fabulous show before dinner, which was awesome, as usual.  I really, really enjoyed my amazing Grand Mariner Soufflé - yummmmmm!  We slept well on our last evening of this wonderful cruise.

February 20, 2017

We opted to have our "last breakfast" in the dining room.  After this, it's back to reality.  Before leaving the ship, we downloaded our Mobile Passport app which made disembarking a snap!  Farewell Celebrity Equinox, you were fabulous!

Punta Cana - December 24 - 30, 2016

December 24, 2016

After a quick three hour flight, we landed in Punta Cana, and with little effort boarded the mini-van for our destination, Colonial Majestic Resort. We were so happy to see Rich, as our welcoming committee, since we'd all be spending Christmas together.  We checked in, did a little recon, and then waited for our luggage....and waited....and waited! Finally, after Connor and I did a bit of detective work, our luggage was located.

We quickly changed and went to dinner.  The resort is absolutely lovely and the weather couldn't be better. We're looking forward to some quality family time in paradise.

Merry Christmas! After breakfast, we ventured out to the beach.  It was an unusual "Christmas" to watch Zumba on the beach!  Personally, I loved it!
Rachelle, Rich, and I did work out at the gym in hopes of ridding ourselves of any extra calories from this all inclusive resort!  After my workout, Rob wanted to be helpful and fill the Jacuzzi with water to help soak away any sore muscles.  Only one problem, the drain plug wouldn't work.  Well, it's a good thing I didn't really have my heart set on that Jacuzzi, because two days later, the plug was finally replaced.  We enjoyed a lovely dinner together and then went to a show where Connor and Zaydie danced away.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Another "Chamber of Commerce" weather day, and we spent the day reading by the pool, Punta Cana style:

Rich and Connor got some more beach time, and Rachelle worked on her new business!

Rob did encounter another little glitch today when he went to make a cup of the local coffee.  Suddenly, swarms of white microscopic bugs appeared.  He called the office for help.  Now, there is a definite language barrier and communication was a constant struggle.  So, I'm busy on my phone Googling "insects" in Spanish while Rob is on the phone with the office.  He totally lost it when the manager said, "Do you want someone to come show you how to make a cup of coffee?"  Oh, my!  Anyway, shortly thereafter, someone appeared at the door with bug spray.  Not good!

Today, was one of those days I'll remember forever with a smile.  Connor and I went golfing at Punta Blanca Golf Course!  We had such a great time together.  The highlight of the day was when Connor bought me a golf ball, which is proudly displayed to make me smile for years to come.
Meanwhile, back in our room, the beautiful fan in the living area suddenly stopped working.  Rob called the office, and again, with a bit of a language barrier, managed to communicate the problem.  The maintenance worker arrived, declared that the fan was "caput" and that it would have to be replaced.  Which did happen, two days later.  We've all decided that we have "the lemon" room!
We all relaxed at the pool bar before getting ready for dinner.  Afterwards, we enjoyed another show, while I sipped a delicious chocolate martini! Part of the entertainment was audience participation in a dance class.  We were all SOOOOO proud of Connor for participating.  Love, love, love that kid!

December 28, 2016

Rich, Rachelle, and Connor went on an excursion today, while Rob and I relaxed by the pool.  We're getting plenty of books read!  AND, we're really enjoying the delicious coffee.  The jogging trail is gorgeous, so I'm logging in plenty of steps. We also took a nice stroll down the beach where the white sand is like powdered sugar.  Poor Connor suffered a finger injury while out on the excursion.  He is such a trooper, never complaining about an injury that I feel sure must hurt.  Love that kid!
Rob and I had reservations at the resort's French restaurant, and the meal truly was delicious.  Afterwards, we met up with the rest of the family.  The absolute best part of this trip is the great family time we get to spend together.  We sit and chat for hours.  Smile!!!!

Can't believe that our final full day has arrived.  We've had THE MOST perfect weather!  Today, we spent most of the day by the pool.  Another favorite memory - Connor got dragged into a dance class.  He is such a good sport.  Anyway, eventually, he was paired with another adorable teenager, a VERY cute young gal, and I took some great pictures; however, you won't see them here because I promised Connor that I wouldn't post the pictures.  Take my word for it, the pictures are fabulous!
We also spent some time walking "into town" - one word - SAD!  The little stores were pitiful, and the owners were like sharks at feeding time as we entered.
Our dinner was delightful!  We had reservations at the Japanese Steak House.  We sat around a hibachi table enjoying a fantastic performance by the chef, as well as a delicious dinner.  It was a great ending to our time together.

Farewell Majestic Colonial, Punta Canta!  The Kleimon Family enjoyed our stay.  We rode to the airport together to begin our journey home. While our tans will fade, our wonderful memories will last a lifetime.

New Orleans - December 1 - 5, 2016

December 1, 2016
We left around 0900 hours for our next adventure to New Orleans to attend the wedding of Patrick and Colleen Stewart.  It was a gorgeous, sunny day so our drive was quick lovely. As we arrived at the Q&C Hotel in New Orleans, we noticed a peaceful demonstration across the street.  Welcome to New Orleans!

After we settled into our room, we ventured out for dinner and coffee at the Starbucks located conveniently around the corner from our hotel.

December 2, 2016

Another gorgeous, sunny day!  We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at our new favorite Starbucks, then set off for the WW II Museum.
We saw only a fraction of this incredible museum and vowed to return some day to finish the job.  We did eat lunch at the museum, and my mouth still waters when I recall the delicious food.  I had the MOST amazing truffle fries EVER, and the po-boy had so much shrimp that Rob and I together could not finish them!  We've quickly discovered that the food in New Orleans is AMAZING as we enjoyed Italian food with the Hussies and Alan before attending the Meet and Greet for Patrick and Colleen.

We had such a great time meeting all of the friends and family of this adorable couple.  I was the "photographer" and it was heartwarming to watch all the people celebrating Patrick and Colleen.

December 3, 2017
We started our day with coffee and beignets at Café du Monde!  Actually, my cell phone and I wore much of powdered sugar from my delicious breakfast.  We then toured the city and enjoyed a truly fabulous day.

We used "Uber" for our ride to dinner, where once again we ate WAY TOO MUCH!  Back at the Hotel, several of us gathered in the bar and chatted way into the wee hours.

December 4, 2016
It's the wedding day, but we have plenty of time to explore this wonderful city, so off we go!
Breakfast at Jimmy J's Café was well worth the thirty minutes we stood in line before getting a table.  Our cute waitress quickly named Rob, "The Fox in the Hen House" with his three Hussies!  After strolling the streets, it was time to return to get ready for the wedding.  Unfortunately, the rain began.  Oy, did it ever rain! Again, I was the videographer, so I loved capturing the happiness and pure joy of the wedding party, friends, and family.  Even in the torrential rain, it was one of the most meaningful weddings I've ever attended!
December 5, 2016
Time to say farewell to this delightful city and begin our journey home.  Due to the horrible rain, the seven hour trip took nine hours!  Fortunately, we arrived home safely, smiling as we recalled the terrific memories of a treasured trip.
